have blogged about The Sky is a Well and Other Shorts. Here are some of Hobart's Sean Carman's good words:

Claudia's strange and beautiful stories are about young women living through "time in between time," that open space between childhood and maturity -- between innocence and experience -- and their power comes from the darkness and deep mystery of that adolescent crossing.

My short-short collection, The Sky is a Well and Other Shorts, is now available from Rose Metal Press

The two-color letterpress covers of this chapbook were printed at the Museum of Printing in Andover, Massachusettes, and each little book was saddle-sewn by hand. The editors at Rose Metal worked long and hard to make this collection pretty.

Heller and Vonnegut
Kurt Vonnegut
Late last night, I read that Kurt Vonnegut died. I first read Kurt Vonnegut when I was in high school; a boy I knew who wanted to write like him introduced me to Slaughterhouse 5 and Joseph Heller's Catch 22. I lost my infatuation with the boy, but I never fell out of love with Vonnegut. RIP, Kurt Vonnegut Jr.

The Sky is a Well and Other Shorts

Here is the promotional blurb about my forthcoming chapbook. I've been reading and admiring Ron Carlson's stories for years, and his words mean a lot to me.

Lyric and gritty, glowing and graceful, The Sky is a Well and Other Shorts is a complex and compact collection from Claudia Smith, funny-sad master of the short short form. Evocative of places and times long gone or going, the ephemera of memory and emotion, youth and age, each story unfolds like a song on a concept album - the pieces can stand alone, but together they blend into a seamless whole you'll want to hear again and again.

"...Each of Claudia Smith's short shorts is a tilted memory of love and loss {..} There is a natural accuracy in these brief narratives; the stories are short; her voice is true."

-Ron Carlson

AWP panel
On Thursday, March 1, I'll be presenting with the panel The Online Writing Community and Flash Fiction: Words Across the World at the AWP conference in Atlanta along with Kim Chinquee, Darlin Neal, Jeff Landon, Girija Tropp, Liesl Jobson, and Kathy Fish. Afterwards, I'll be reading alongside the panelists as well as the wonderful poet and writer Tiff Holland at the Georgia Tech Barnes and Noble. The reading starts at 3:30 p.m. I hope to see some of you there! I've been workshopping with the writers who'll be reading for years.
